How To Play The Clarinet
The clarinet is a woodwind instrument with a beautiful, soft, pure sound. There are many different kinds of clarinets, yet all of them have a very large scale of notes that can be played. It has one of the widest ranges of pitch, which makes it a very unique and interesting instrument to play. The development of the clarinet over the years has really made the clarinet stand out and make it an amazing instrument to be able to play. In school band, or trying to learn it on your own, the clarinet is an amazing instrument to play, so here’s how...
Follow these steps to guide you in performing proper form with your mouth on the mouthpiece.
- Set the reed on your bottom lip.
- Cover your bottom teeth with your bottom lip gently.
- Place your top teeth firmly on the mouthpiece.
- Close your mouth almost as if you're smiling.
When trying to make good sound come out of your clarinet, blow facing straight forward without puffing out your cheeks, to make a good firm sound. Use only your thumb to hold up/support your instrument. Using the metal piece on the back that is sticking out almost like a shelf, place your thumb underneath it to hold the clarinet upright. How much of the mouthpiece that you have in your mouth and what angle you hold it at, play an important factor in creating good sound. If you have too much mouthpiece in your mouth the sound will become squeaky and contorted, but if you have too little it will be hard to make a sound. To find the perfect spot on your mouthpiece that makes the best sound, place your mouth on the mouthpiece where you find it starts to squeak... then slowly start pulling more and more of the mouthpiece out of your mouth while blowing until you find the spot that allows a pure, sodt tone to come out.
